Rough layout of college magazine front cover and contents page

Plans for my college magazine front cover

Magazine name

My college magazine is going to be called "The CAN'TEEN'"

Mis-en-scene of my front cover

The mis-en-scene of my front cover will be the LRC in the college. I have chosen this as it is a familiar location in the college and therefore people will be able to relate to my magazine and will be more likely to carry on reading the magazine.

Planning production

The front cover image will be a four piece band stood against a brick wall, the band will be dressed all similar and will look serious in order to make the photo seem more professional. The coverlines for my cover will be
  • Arctic Monkeys: we're already working on our new album
  • Kodaline are splitting?
  • A day in the life of tyler the creator
  • Beyond Belief: we're ready to take on the world
  • Win tickets to see the 1975
  • We discuss the most overrated and underrated bands in history
My contents page will have different sections, in music news, festival news and reviews, my music news will be:

  • Arctic Monkeys: our next album is different to anything we've ever done!
  • The Rolling Stones: our final tour before we call it a day!
  • All Time Low: we're so excited to come to the UK!
  • Sly Digs: exclusive interview with the biggest rising band in the UK!
The festival news will be:

  • We discuss who the final acts for Leeds could be!
  • We decide which the best festivals are this summer!
  • Win tickets to go to tomorrowland!
The reviews will be:

  • We review Crystal Fighters' new smash album: Rave Cave!
  • Warpaint: we review their brilliant new self entitled album!
I will need a close up of one artist and a band for my contents page, I have decided to use the same band twice to cement a familiarity.

The article I am going to write for my double page spread will be a question and answer with a band about their music and opinions on the industry.

Questionnaire results

From these results, I can conclude that the most common word to describe rock music is fun. This informs me that the people typically like this genre so it is a popular genre. Also, I can conclude that the main 3 colours people chose to be the house style for my magazine were red black and white, I took this into account and used these colours as this is what most people wanted. Also, I can conclude that the favourite artist for most people were the Arctic Monkeys, this means that I should include them on my contents page in order to attract a wider and more populated audience. Most people typically read other magazines like Q and Kerrang, this means I will have to somehow incorporate these. The people that filled in my questionnaire mainly believed that my magazine should be published monthly, I thought this would be the best too as that would mean more content could be published and more time could be taken if it were a real magazine, so because my target audience agreed with me I decided to agree to this and have it released on the first of each month. Also, from the data that I gathered I can also conclude that most people felt the magazine should be between £2.00 and £2.99, so I agreed to put my magazine between this price range and price it at £2.99. Most people did not want specific content in the magazine, from this I conclude that people want fresh ideas every month and this would allow my magazine to keep competing as it is something new and fresh every month. One of the questions was what offers do people want, the most popular choice was posters, therefore I can conclude from this that I should have posters in my magazine in order to attract people to buy the magazine. The final question was "would you buy this magazine?" most people said that they would and from this I can conclude that my magazine will be a success.

Here you can see my three recorded questionnaires that I gathered and conducted for the results too.

Article research

Kerrang uses a 10 question format for interviews, this is a recurring theme throughout most articles with the odd exception. The questions are usually casual too in order to make it seem like a conversation throughout the interview. The photo is difficult to see but the 10 questions are clearly shown above, in the next article I will show the casual tone of the article.

Here the casual language of the magazine can be seen clearly, the effects of having the language like this are positive as it is friendly towards the reader of the magazine and makes them feel more comfortable, it also makes the article easier to read as it seems like an everyday conversation.

The photos in these screenshots also share a similar format, they all seem to cover one side of the double page spread in order to direct a lot of focus onto the artists to attract attention to the article. The photos in these articles all seem to share a similar theme of showing the top half only, this is so that the reader is able to identify and recognise the artists easier as the photo is more intimate and up close.
